Jayden lay in a pool of blood, thick claret dribbling down the side of his cheek. He didn’t know how long he’d been there. His fingers unfolded slowly as his eyes opened. He tried moving, crawling along the cold grey gravel, but he was weak. Reaching into his pocket with trembling hands he tried to make a call but lost the grip on his mobile phone. A car was coming towards him, headlights on full beam. Two men got out and stood next to him.

‘Get the twat up from the floor and get him in the car,’ the man’s voice said.

Jayden’s eyes flickered; words trapped behind his lips.

The man’s voice came again, his hot breath in his face. ‘Where’s the fucking weed?’

Jayden’s eyes were wide open now, his voice barely audible. ‘Dunno. One minute I was sat there waiting on you guys to arrive, and then I know fuck all. They attacked me.’

The man dragged him to his feet, his legs buckling. ‘Don’t give me that shit. You set it up, didn’t you? Fucking rat.’

‘No, honest, I was nothing to do with it. Tez has been good to me, a good mate and all that. I would never piss on my own doorstep.’

‘Nah, I don’t believe a word the runt is saying,’ the taller of the two men said to his friend. ‘Shove him in the boot and we’ll soon see, when he’s got a shooter to his head, what he knows. Because, trust me, I’ll blow your fucking head off, mate.’

Jayden was dragged by the scruff of his neck by the men and flung into the boot of the car. His voice was a whisper, no energy to protest his innocence.

Darkness again. His breathing shallow. If he carried on like this he was going to have a heart attack for sure. He could feel wetness around his head, cold shivers down his spine. Was this his time to meet his maker? The car started and he dragged his knees up to his chest, twisting in the narrow space as a pain surged into the back of his eyes. His eyes stared into the darkness but he found no answers there.
